Pioneer Village Grand Opening Celebration

Saturday, July 25, 2026

The San Joaquin County Historical Museum will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday, July 25 from 9:00am to 1:00pm for the new Pioneer Village, an immersive history education space and the new home of the Museum’s award-winning Valley Days and Pioneer School education programs. The event will feature live entertainment, bluegrass music, hands-on pioneer activities, historical demonstrations, and guests will be able to explore the Pioneer Village. Local food vendors Costa’s Kettle Corn, Peachy’s Food to Go, and Odyssey Coffee will have food and beverages available for purchase. The first 500 guests will receive a complimentary celebration Bundtini provided by our special event partner, Nothing Bundt Cakes of Lodi. This will also be the final day to see the exhibit “San Joaquin County:  175 Years of Growing Greatness.” Admission is free and there is a $6 per car fee to enter Micke Grove Park (free for Members). For more information, call (209) 331-2055.

The Pioneer Village project has been a dream of the San Joaquin County Historical Museum and its Docent Council since the earliest days of the Valley Days and Pioneer School programs. For sixty years, the San Joaquin County Historical Museum has worked to preserve, share, and celebrate the diverse histories of our county and to inspire future generations toward continued greatness. We are confident that the Pioneer Village will allow us to continue this important work on an even greater scale.

The Pioneer Village will dramatically improve the historic atmosphere, efficiency, accessibility, and safety of our many living history programs including Valley Days, Pioneer School, and Farm to Fork. By centralizing the many activities of these programs in one immersive space, we can transport visitors “back in time” and give them an even better and more memorable experience. The facilities constructed as part of this project will also allow us to more effectively reach the community through weekend and summer programming.

New, creatively designed activity buildings such as the Blacksmith Shop, Cookshack, Harness Shop, Print Shop, Farmhouse, and others will allow us to serve more and larger student groups. They will also provide better educational demonstrations and improve the historical authenticity of our programming. The Pioneer Village will feature modern amenities and accessibility while retaining all the charm of a 19th-century Central Valley town.

The Pioneer Village will also include two new multi-use spaces. The area will allow for activity space during inclement weather and air conditioning will provide greater opportunities for summer programming. The Pioneer Village has also been thoughtfully designed to connect with the existing Sunshine Trail, Delta Water Path, Charles Weber Cottage, and Calaveras Schoolhouse to create a more immersive and integrated educational experience.

We are confident that the Pioneer Village will allow us to better serve our community and inspire even greater numbers of youth to know and appreciate their history as citizens of San Joaquin County and we are excited to finally see this decades-long dream be realized thanks to the hard work and dedication of our trustees, staff, docents, volunteers, and contractors as well as the support of the County of San Joaquin, the Board of Supervisors, and our generous donors and benefactors.

The Forgotten History of the Filipino Farm Center Opening Celebration

Sunday, September 8, 2024

11:00am – 3:00pm

Regular Admission:
Adults, $7.00; Seniors & Military, $6; Youth (6-17), $5:00;  Kids ages 0-5 and Members are free. Parking in Micke Grove Park, $6 per car (free for members).

Located on Manila Road in the unincorporated community of Lathrop, California, the Filipino Farm Center served as an important hub for Filipino farm owners and their families who lived in the area from the 1940s to the 1960s.

In December 2023, a group of descendants of the Filipino families that lived, worked, or were active members of the Farm Center convened to share old photographs and fond memories. The families requested that their memories/stories be recorded and documented to preserve the Farm Center’s history and to share this important part of Filipino American history with the wider community. Now, in partnership with the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, their desire is becoming a reality in the new exhibit, The Forgotten History of the Filipino Farm Center.

Through photos and artifacts, as well as firsthand accounts recorded by videographer Louis Ambriz, visitors will learn about the history of Filipinos in California and San Joaquin County, the factors that lead to the formation of the Farm Center, its active years, and its legacy which lives on today through the lives of those who were there.
