Reproduction Policies

The San Joaquin County Historical Society (“Society”) will provide reproductions of documents, photographs, and printed material from its holdings if duplication does not violate the Fair Use provision of Title 17 of the United States Copyright Law, is not restricted by prior agreement with the donor, and can be accomplished without damage to the originals. The Society reserves the right to deny requests at its discretion.

The Society does not own copyright for most private collections.  It grants permission to publish as the owner of the physical items, but it does not intend to imply that it holds copyright, which the patron must also obtain from the owner of the copyright. No permission is needed to publish or quote from public documents.

Digital cameras and cell phones may be used in the Society’s library provided that no flash is used. Use of images beyond personal research requires publication fees.

Patrons who wish to use reproductions of the Society’s holdings in publications, Web sites, films, and so forth, must complete a Request for Permission to Publish Photographs and Other Material and pay all appropriate fees in advance.

The preferred citation for the Society’s material follows: [identification of item and collection], San Joaquin County Historical Society, Lodi, California.

The San Joaquin County Historical Society requires that a copy of any publication that contains reproductions of text or images from its holdings be sent to the following address:
